Day 12 Wednesday 13 September 2006 Brunei - Singapore

Breakfast at the hotel in the city and a quick walk around before the bus back to the airport. No pavements and with deep drains along the edge of the street difficult to walk around. A large very imposing white and gold mosque close to the hotel and some nice park areas, but that was about all we saw of the country. Supposed to be very rich but we suspect that the sultan keeps it all as there wasn’t much evidence of much wealth.

Flight to Singapore arrived early afternoon and we checked into the Stamford, along with most of the IMF. Security was very tight with scanners and body searches at every entrance, armed police and army everywhere, barricades and intimidating looking devices preventing entry to the hotel and most of the surrounding streets cordoned off – supposed to make us feel safe. The receptionist must have misheard us described as a couple of Aussie bankers as they gave us a corner suite on the 62nd floor with great views except when it was thundering as then it was above the clouds and you couldn’t see the ground.

Explored the river and Boat Quay in the evening, had delicious chilli crab by the waterfront. Nice being a tourist.
