Day 2 - Sunday 3 September 2006 Bourke to Blackall

After a sumptuous and late breakfast and a few emails, we headed out of Bourke on the Mitchell Highway towards Charleville and Blackall 780km north in southern Queensland. Bourke marks the apocryphal edge of the outback and was the limit of navigation for paddle steamers on the Darling River, as well as the rail head for the vast and sparsely populated hinterland.
The route to Charleville ran through flat, scrubby and lightly wooded terrain, largely given over to grazing by hardy outback sheep and even hardier cattle. We passed a few pubs and fewer cars, with most of the traffic comprising grey nomads in fourwheel drives pulling caravans or intimidating Mack trucks pulling up to four trailers, belting along at 120km/hr. Lots of kangaroos, dead and alive, and emus.
Arrived Blackall, stayed at the Acacia motel (average) with good Chinese buffet at the pub across the road.
