Day 20 Thursday 21 September 2006 Ko Lanta, Thailand

This is paradise, beautiful resort, friendly staff and delicious breakfast next to the beach. Beautiful sunny day, lovely pool and gardens, with enough people to be comfortable but not crowded. Sunset boat trip with the resort hosts from the nearby town through the mangrove lined channel separating Ko Lanta Yai from the less developed Ko Lanta Noi. Very peaceful with kingfishers, sea eagles and macaque monkeys scurrying in the mangroves. Strangely the resort owners are the only ones who take visitors to this area, which has great potential for eco-tourism.

Ko Lanta has largely recovered from the effects of the tsunami which flooded the lower part of the resort. It resulted in a new road being constructed along the island which whilst beneficial is opening up the area to tourism and will undoubtedly lead to increased mass tourism. At present it offers a quiet and more laid back contrast to Phuket but with new roads and Krabi now having international flights its going to change rapidly so get there before it does.
