Day 9 Sunday 10 September 2006 Darwin - Litchfield

A leisurely morning before driving to Litchfield national park for a 4pm rendezvous at Green Ant Creek with the guide from Odyssey who was to escort us to a remote camp site for the night. The drive was uneventful until we turned into the Park about 80km south of Darwin, where fires were threatening to engulf the road. Dauntless we pressed on through the smoke and flame until we reached a photo stop at an area with lots of termite mounds of all shapes and sizes. A little further on we met up with Dani in a land cruiser who was to be our guide, cook and crocodile hunter for the day.

We followed her down a dirt track, through a 1m deep river where we cautiously wrapped the car in a ground sheet to stop it being flooded, and through the bush for about 30ks until we arrived at a large billabong at Minjungari where Odyssey had a safari-style camp with a few comfortable 2 person tents, with floors and proper beds (none of this roughing it on this trip). We were the only ones there this night so after listening to the birds, staying away from the edge of the billabong to avoid the crocodile, and drinking lots of red wine, we had a delicious dinner of barramundi and retired to watch the stars and full moon rising.
