Day 36 Saturday 7 October Bangkok to Koen Khan, Thailand

Leaving Bangkok was much easier and quicker than arriving, heading north on elevated expressway to Ayuthatya, the former capital of Siam with lots of ruins and chedi spread over a wide area. Then it was a test of navigation skills via back roads to join the main north-east highway to Koen Khan, a major provincial city and agricultural centre 500km nw of Bangkok.

Fortunately most of the roads in Thailand are of a good standard and once we joined the highway it was dual carriage way the entire distance so we were able to average 120km/h. Even so and despite our no driving at night rule which we seem to have broken most days, it was 8pm before we reached the Sofitel in Koen Khan, a slightly incongruous luxury high rise hotel in the centre of town, which had its own micro brewery making a very fine lager which we sampled as part of their Oktoberfest. LPs recommended restaurant turned out to be a building site so we had very good local sausages at one nearby.
