Day 40 Wed 11 October Viang Veng

9am pick up for our kayaking and caving adventure on the Nam Song river, which involved being driven about 20kms out of town and then gradually making our way back down stream. Neither G nor J was particularly fit and only just managed to make it back in one piece, after capsizing in the first rapid, losing our dry bag with passports, cameras etc (fortunately it floated and the guide retrieved it) and getting stuck on several rocks, trees and assorted obstacles. Funny, they don’t have rapids on Middle Harbour.

One cave involved swimming 100m in the dark, and cold and then carrying waterproof candles. Over a thousand villagers had had to live in the cave during the US bombing raids of the secret Lao war in the 1960s.
