Day 109 Monday 18th December, Gurgaon - Jaipur, India

We leave after breakfast and are soon on National Highway 8 to Rajastan. Its a good road with little traffic and only the occasional on-coming bullock cart. However, curiously it’s lined by petrol stations, there can't possibly be enough demand to keep them in business but that seems to be a characteristic of Indian business, every business whether it's shoe shine boys, samosa sellers or petrol stations or airlines is replicated until prices and wages are depressed to such an extent that they barely make a profit – its the ultimate perfect market economy in some ways with virtually no barriers to entry and no excess profits (think that was part of the MBA course). Pity it doesn’t seem to apply to hotels.

After getting lost in Amber with its splendid 15th century fort, we reach Jaipur. An autorickshaw walla takes us on an inadvertent tour of the city as he mistakes Amer Road for MI Road, must be my Indian accent. We eventually find the restaurant we were aiming for which has a splendid display of turbans. There are hundreds with different colours and styles which denote rank, caste, village or town and sometimes profession. Each is typically made of 40ft of cloth. The restaurant tucked away in a courtyard has a dance show which is pretty good, with girls balancing lots of pots on their heads.
