Day 164 Wednesday 28 February 2007 Lahore

After booking I2s ticket back to Sydney where her mother is ill, we move back to the Holiday Inn, round the corner from the Avari and spend the day blogging. Rather than bore everyone with our antics we thought we’d share with you a few snippets from the local press:
• A women seeks divorce after her husband buys a new tractor with the proceeds from the kidney he paid the doctor to extract from her when she had a miscarriage
• A man is caught by the cops (sic) after his ex wife reports that he identified a body as himself in an attempt to escape prosecution for beating her up
• Three people are killed in a shoot out with police after they steal a fire engine
• The rail tracks to Quetta are blown up for the third time in as many days
• Tribal leaders in Quetta stage a procession and roadblock in protest that the police aren’t doing enough to track down bombing suspects and demand that they be given the rights to carry out the investigations themselves
• Pakistan International Airways is banned from flying to Germany (and the Eu) due to its poor maintenance record. At the same time the president is given a new (old)plane by Qatar Airways
• While being chased from a wedding reception by disgruntled guests, a band of musicians runs into a procession of 30 camels and the ensuing melee results in 3deaths and a 24 hr curfew being declared. Whilst he is visiting the family of one of the victims a local politician’s henchmen beat up onlookers by mistake (to be fair this was in India not Pakistan)
• Sunday’s Basant kite festival to mark the start of spring results in the death of 10 people, including a motorcyclist who’s head is cut off by the string, one who falls from a roof and several killed by falling bullets fired into the air at kites
• A guy claiming to be a suicide bomber runs into a bank as a protest about the way people casually discard yesterdays newspapers even if the have the name of Allah printed in them
If only we had Peter Debnam to make some real news......
