Day 224 Sun 27 May 2007 Assisi to Spoleto, Italy
Awoken by the bells from the church literally just outside our window,(the rooms at the same level as the bells in the tower) we find breakfast in Italy has improved considerably from the hard rolls and cold coffee of 30 years ago and, suitably sated, we wend our way towards Spoleto via Perugia.
We stop in Perugia, another medieval hill top town which like Assisi is largely car free, with carparks below linked by escalators. Climbing up to the centre we find the cathedral and the main museum which occupies us for most of the afternoon with its fascinating art collection housed in a massive Venetian style palazzo. We also find an interesting Etruscan well dating from C2nd BC before driving on to Spoleto where after several circuits of its maze of narrow streets we find the Hotel Charleston and a splendid meal at the Apollinaire restaurant.
