Day 225 Mon 28 May 2007 Spoleto to Tivoli, Italy

The overnight rain eases up and we explore Spoleto, reputedly Umbria’s loveliest hill town which lives up to its reputation. The cathedral has a beautifully restored fresco cycle by Fra Filipo Lippi from 1476 depicting the life of the Virgin and Pinturicchio’s unfinished Madonna and Child. There’s also the fantastic 80m high Ponte delle Torri bridge over the river to visit, after which we duck into a nearby wine bar to escape the recurrent rain. It rains hard as we leave Spoleto and an accident on the main road forces on to a series of winding back lanes towards Tivoli outside Rome.

Despite its two world heritage sites, Tivoli has a dearth of hotels and we spend ages circling the old town in search of somewhere to stay. The plan to use this as a base for exploring Rome is cancelled but we eventually find the Hotel Sirene overlooking a temple of Vesta and the gardens of Villa Gregoriana. In the evening we go in search of an internet cafe and get hopelessly lost in the labyrinth of lanes in the medieval city, even Kenny can’t see enough of the sky to find our way back.
