Day 231-4 Sun 3 – Wed 6 Jun 2007 Bosa, Sardinia, Italy

We spend four days in this sleepy little town on the west coast, doing very little apart from drinking coffee in the square, drinking wine on the roof and eating an assortment of local produce which ranges from pecorino cheese and olives to lobster and sardines (what else in Sardinia). We start getting used to the afternoon siesta where everything closes from 1pm to 5pm and everyone sleeps or something.
One day we decide to visit Alghero 45km to the north where we take a boat trip across the bay to the sea caves at Capo Caccia (the Grotte dei Nettune). In the evening we linger too long over pasta and a bottle of semillon watching the sunset to find the 24hr petrol station has closed. The car’s saying it will only go 30km so we waste 10kms in an unsuccessful attempt to find a station which is open.

Crossing our fingers we set off back to Bosa at 11pm, coasting down the hills but by half way its saying only 5km left. Pressing on and trying not to brake on the twisting cliff road we finally make it to Bosa with the car saying minus 15km and park in the first available spot outside the petrol station. In the morning we discover that there’s in fact a nationwide petrol strike which started at sunset and will last for two days and we haven’t even enough petrol to get to the beach. Still there are worse places to be marooned, at least the weather’s fine, the food’s good and there’s no shortage of wine, although whether we will make it back to the other side of the island for the ferry on Friday is another matter.
