Garmin Crew Diary: The Missing Ingredient

Garmin Crew Diary 11 Feb 2018
Tropical calm aboard Garmin

We have had all sorts of conditions in the last couple of days – heat, rain, blue skies and grey but one element has been in short supply and no, it’s not gin! The thing we have all been hoping for has been WIND.

We have been stewing below deck and frying above because we were sitting in a wind hole doing little more than 1 knot of boat speed. The temptation to jump overboard for a quick swim has been great and it was estimated that we could probably swim faster than the boat!We were enjoying the comparative cool of the night and admiring the stars, when out of nowhere came a heavy rain shower. Very refreshing but annoying when you are about to come off watch and don’t want to deal with sodden clothes.

But relief is here – we have wind and are reaching speeds of over 11 knots in our quest to reach the waypoint north of the Philippines ahead of our competitors – only 2,000 odd miles to go!

I would like to add that despite the frustrations, everyone on board has been remarkably cheerful, all working together to get us to Sanya as quickly as possible and enjoying the challenge.
